PreKote® Surface Pretreatment

PreKote® is used on metal and composite substrates prior to priming and painting aircraft. PreKote offers superior paint adhesion and flexibility, while providing advanced corrosion protection.

By eliminating the need for chromate conversion coatings, acid etches, solvent washes and other toxic processes, these surface Pretreatments can reduce paint preparation time and costs by up to 40 percent while yielding results far superior to those achieved from using hazardous processes and products.

PreKote Surface Pretreatment has passed stringent testing by the U.S. Department of Defense, the Boeing Company and other coating industry leaders.

PreKote® Benefits

  • Hexavalent chromium-free, non toxic, non-flammable, non-corrosive, odor-free, biodegradable
  • Replaces at least four chemicals used with other processes
  • Decreases material, labor and hazardous handling costs
  • Easy, safe process
  • Quantified superior results
  • Reduces hazardous waste
  • Results in a high-performing surface finish
  • No short or long term health risks

PreKote® can be used on a wide range of surfaces including aluminum, magnesium, cadmium, steel and coposite materials.

PreKote cleans the surface to be painted while enhancing the adhesion of coatings and improves corrosion protection - all with a superior, non-hazardous and safe technology. This easy-to apply process deposits a molecular layer that bonds to the surface of metal or composite material. This layer allows the coating, when applied, to get closer to the substrate surface than traditional pre-treatmats creating a stronger bond with the surface.

PreKote also provides a polar/non-polar molecule that attaches itself to permanently imbedded contamination; this molecule attracts the coating. In contrast, traditional conversion coatings containing heavy metals such as chrome or zinc have no mechanism by which to attach themselves to permanently imbedded contamination. Since the coating cannot attach itself to those areas, it is a common cause of coating blisters, out-gassing(pinholes), skips, etc.

Technical Info

The studies conducted by coating industry leaders proved the superior efficiency of the PreKote system. PreKote not only performed beyond industry expectations but added savings and benefits never before achieved. The PreKote process can save up to 40 percent in time and labor compared to the chromate conversion process. Subsequent studies have shown that by eliminating chromate conversion coatings in the painting process, savings of up to $2.23 per square foot can be realized. What impact could this have on your business?

The 1998 Ogden Air Logistics Report, AETC Bans Alodine Article, AETC Final Report, C-130 Operational Report, and Testing on Missile Silo at F.E.Warren support the successful use of PreKote as a chromate conversion coating replacement.
